When your jewelry finds its way to your mailbox it is always stuffed with extras; a blend of potpourri and tumble stones, which makes shopping at her store addictive and fun. I recently sat down with Addie across the internet to find out more about her and her creative process.

1. When did crystals first enter your life?
My first rock collection began when I was only 2yrs old. My mom would find rocks in my pockets when doing the laundry and eventually got a large dish for storing them there in the laundry room. When my mom would go to a friends house and I would tag along, I took it as an opportunity to raid their garden for rocks and shells. I found rocks everywhere and kept them.

In the first house I ever lived in, my mom and dad ordered gravel. It was like a dream come true!! Sure, most pieces were just regular gray rocks, boring to most, but some of them had huge quartz pieces in them! Sparkling bits and even some drusy crystals! I couldn’t believe I had so many mounds of this stuff to dig through! I went through it for days.

It began my journey and I started going on trips for mining/digging. My collection got so big that by the time I was 9 yrs old, it encompassed most of my room, and most of my life. My mom and dad were MORE than supportive. They could tell that this was my passion and encouraged me to collect, study, and travel. They kept this in mind when gift buying and purchased me a huge lighted glass show case for my bed room. For most of my childhood my room was kind of a museum. My Christmas stockings were always filled with rocks, specimens, crystals, and jewelry. Some kids would have been depressed by a stocking filled with rocks, but for me, it was a dream come true!! By my teens I was enrolled in premature college courses for geology. I was always really great at retaining the information regarding stone identification. It all came so naturally.

2. What drew you to work with them?
Through out my childhood I had very creative and inspirational role models. My sister and Casey (my baby sitter) were both really crafty and kind to me. They had lots of beads that they shared and even showed me techniques. I was instantly hooked and by 10 yrs old I was crafting some really fun stuff.

None of it was any good, but I was enjoying every step of the way. By 12 yrs old, my sister and I had made our first set of Zodiac bracelets and sold them at the local air show. Working with crystals and beads and hemp came so naturally to me. Everyone around me was more than supportive.

My sister taught me so much about crafting hemp jewelry. When I saw her make the famous square knot for the first time, I looked at her like she was a super hero. I took her teachings and manifested my own line of jewelry. With my previous education regarding geology, it just seemed like the next step when it came to combing them.

3. What is your creative process for selecting the gemstones and the type of jewellery you’ll make?

I don’t really know how to answer this. I don’t have any methods or special secrets. I don’t regiment or plan anything. It all sort of happens all on it’s own. It’s truly organic. How I get my supplies is also rather random and seems to happen on it’s own. I don’t stick to a color scheme, and I try not to let anything limit me. In doing that, things seem to flow. The creative process is all via intuition and flow.

4. What’s next for RareDaisyJewelry?

Soon our stand alone online shop www.RareDaisy.com will be up and running – I hope to launch all my new lines directly after that website has been completed. Also, my sister shop www.YouGlitzyBlonde.etsy.com has been resurrected once again. It is a line I started to express my more girly side. I found it too hard to run two shops at once so I closed it up temporarily. Now I think I have it together and I can maintain both shops with equal enthusiasm.

How did Tarot appear into your life?

What a wonderfully phrased question. Tarot appeared in my life at a very young age. My mother had a lovely Albano-Waite deck that she used to do readings for me as a youngster. I was fascinated by the cards and used to sneak into her room to rifle through them.
I would lay them out and try to read them myself, but it never seemed to be accurate or telling in the way they were when my Mom handled them with her magical fingers. When she passed away a few years ago, I decided to keep them among the few positions of hers I ended up with. They still bring me warm feelings… and I still can’t get them to give me an accurate reading.

What was your inspiration for creating your own set of cards?

My best friend Paris is a huge inspiration to me. She’s an amazing artist and a couple years ago she suggested we do a collaborative art project. She had checked out a book on collaborative multimedia art from the library. We considered an altered book, but that would mean only one of us would have it at any one time, and we both wanted something we could work on independently.

She suggested a deck of cards- and then that idea morphed into the idea of tarot cards. The symbolism and gravity of a deck of tarot cards seemed really appealing to both of us and matched really well with our artistic aesthetic.

We split the deck into two parts- she would do the cups and the swords- and I’d do staves and pentacles. We each hand-picked which major arcana we’d do- split it right down the middle.

After seven months or so I had finished my half of the deck- I had really blown through them- and Paris had only finished about 4 or 5 cards. I felt really conflicted about it because I didn’t want to insult her, but I asked if she would mind if I finished the deck- I was having SO much fun creating the cards I just didn’t want to stop. She seemed really relieved- she’d been so busy as a single Mom that she just hadn’t had time to work on them very much. She offered me the cards she’d already finished but it didn’t seem right using them as they were because I’d be taking credit for them, so I ok’d using them as backgrounds with her, and incorporated them into the remaining cards.

How does the creative process work when designing your cards?

Each one was such an adventure. I tried to use some new or different technique on each card. I’d take a piece of cardstock or cardboard and wait for an inspiration. It usually didn’t take long. Sometimes I’d find an image that really evoked a particular card, sometimes I’d think
“Gee, I wonder if I could find a picture of an…” and search furiously until I either found the perfect image or gave up with a migraine. And then sometimes, I’d just start making a background and wait for the card to take shape. I ended up making a lot of duds. If I hated a card- even if I’d spent hours making it, I’d just layer another one right on top of it. Some cards are 3 images deep, hah!
I used all different kinds of stuff. Different kinds of papers, paints, inks, stains, glazes, varnishes, stickers, ribbon, metal embellishments, glass, feathers, real insects, bones, ceramic, wood refuse, gold and silver leaf, stamps, punches, powders, pens, wax, glitter, fabric, fake pearls, rub on transfers…. Pretty much anything I could think of.

In your video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sSac…1C6D44DDCC4F3D ) I noticed there are a lot of 3D embellishments attached to the cards. How did you scan the cards to show the art work to its fullest potential?

Some of the cards were so thick they were a challenge to scan, like the King of Sticks (a real stick insect), the two of coins (beetles), and several other cards, which had lots of dimension. The original Queen of Sticks had to be ditched because she wouldn’t scan properly. I ended up really preferring the replacement anyway, but the original had a background made of black velveteen paper- which is so beautiful and rich and lush in real life, and which looks like absolute garbage when you scan it.

Some of the cards I had to scan a few times to get them right. But the printers I went through did an amazing job of centring, rotating, and cropping them. There are very few with any edge that’s been cut out. A few you can tell were a bit uneven in real life, and therefore have bits of their borders missing.

What does the future hold for you?

I’ll keep doing whatever sort of art strikes my fancy. I’ve always been very fickle about what sort of art I’m creating. When I was a teenager I wrote a lot of bad poetry (who doesn’t?) but eventually grew to realise I really didn’t find it fulfilling. For a long time after that I was into black and white photography- back when that meant having a darkroom. But there was a point where digital just completely eclipsed traditional film photography, and I threw up my arms in frustration when I realised that something that took me 8 hours in a darkroom took 5 minutes in Photo shop.

Since then I’ve bounced from oil painting, acrylics, to novel writing, to guitar making, to all different kinds of multimedia, comics, mounting insects, miniatures, charcoal drawing, scrap booking, oil pastels, and an altered book.

I figure I’ll keep up doing that sort of eclectic and indecisive weaving between pursuits. It’s really agreed with me thus far, and I can only hope I’ll have the inspiration and desire to keep making stuff until I’m dust.
